Renault Truck EGR Fault Solution

We solve power loss, black smoke and warning-light problems caused by the EGR valve and EGR cooler on Renault trucks and tractor units with ECU software. The cause of the fault is diagnosed first and the original software is backed up.

On trucks and tractor units EGR faults are common at high mileage. The symptoms are reduced pulling power on hills, black smoke, higher fuel consumption and frequent particulate filter regeneration; a faulty EGR also fills the DPF quickly.

The EGR system returns part of the exhaust gas to the intake. That gas carries soot; over time the valve, the cooler and the intake manifold become coated with it. When the valve sticks the engine cannot draw clean air: power drops, smoke increases, idle becomes unstable and the ECU stores a fault.

When the EGR cooler is perforated, coolant passes to the exhaust side and the engine starts losing coolant; in that case software alone is not the answer and the cooler has to be bypassed or replaced. We tell you which job is right after diagnosis.

When is it needed?

  • EGR valve fault and soot build-up
  • Rough idle, smoke, power loss
  • Carbon build-up in the intake manifold

Typical duration: 1–2 hours

Renault EGR Fault Solution: supported control units

Control units for which our library holds a verified solution for this service on Renault: BOSCH EDC16C41 and TRW VOLVO EMS2.3 ECM. The same model can carry a different ECU depending on build year and engine option; we confirm compatibility from a photo of the ECU label or from the file read out.

Frequently asked questions

What are the symptoms of a Renault truck EGR fault?
Loss of power and pulling ability, black smoke under heavy load, unstable idle, higher fuel consumption and the engine warning light are the most common symptoms. With a cooler fault, coolant loss is added to these.
Does an EGR fault affect the DPF?
Yes. A stuck EGR valve upsets combustion and increases soot production; the particulate filter fills much faster than normal. That is why the two systems are assessed together.
How long does the job take?
Most ECUs are read and written through the diagnostic socket and the job is completed the same day. Some units are removed and worked on the bench.
Can the original software be restored?
Yes. The original ECU software is backed up and archived before the job; the factory setting can be restored on request.
Does the EGR job give the vehicle more power?
The EGR job is not a power remap; no power gain should be expected from it alone. Because the loss of pull and the power reduction caused by a faulty EGR disappear, the vehicle returns to its factory output. If more power is wanted, a Stage 1 remap is applied separately.
The vehicle is losing coolant. Could it be related to the EGR?
It could. When the EGR cooler leaks internally, coolant passes to the exhaust side; coolant drops without any visible leak and white smoke may come from the exhaust. This is a mechanical fault and software does not fix it; the cooler is repaired or replaced. The software solution is for EGR faults caused by the valve and sensors.
